Chinese Drywall Update 6/14/2010

Our Chinese Drywall Hotline (1-877-496-4662) logged over 200 phone calls in the month of May.  Many of those phone calls were from Home Buyers interested in purchasing second homes in Florida!  Their largest concern was "What if I buy a home and it has Chinese Drywall?"

Of course, the immediate response is, "Have the home inspected BEFORE you buy it!"

With so many Home Inspectors out there and more "Fly By Night" companies coming out of the woodworks to offer Chinese Drywall Inspections, Home Buyers are faced with a dilemma. How do they know if they have chosen the right Inspector?

Florida will begin enforcing the new Home Inspector licensing law on 7/1/2010.  This will create an even bigger dilemma for Home Buyers.  Another bill recently passed in Florida legislation that allows Home Inspectors to continue practicing without a license until 7/11/2011.   The delay is due to the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation not being able to accept applications for licensure until the law goes into effect next month.  Although Home Inspectors may continue to practice after the law goes into effect, there are not any provisions for Chinese Drywall Inspections in the law! This means that the "Fly By Night" companies that offer Chinese Drywall Inspections will keep surfacing! Home Buyers will have to rely on EXPERIENCED Inspectors to protect them.

When Home Buyers are looking for a Home Inspector in Southwest Florida, the most important part of their search is to make sure that the Inspector is EXPERIENCED in performing both Chinese Drywall Inspections and Home Inspections.  Furthermore, the Inspector should be including a Chinese Drywall Inspection for FREE with a Full Home Inspection, otherwise this should be considered taking advantage of the consumer. 

A word of caution about the "Fly By Night" companies that have surfaced only offering Chinese Drywall "Testing, Inspections, etc.":  Kross Inspectors has played an instrumental part in working with State Agencies to expose those that are using potentially dangerous equipment in homes without proper registrations and/or qualified training for personnel.  Some of these companies are operating equipment that puts the home's occupants at safety risks (and even the Realtors that attend the inspection).  If anyone approaches you that uses "Xray" equipment in the home to inspect for Chinese Drywall, INSIST on obtaining a copy of their equipment registration from the state.
