Spring Reminders For Home Owners

As our winter season comes to a close, many home owners are headed back north for the summer. Below are the top 12 items Kross Inspectors recommends to pay attention to prior to vacating your home for the summer: 

1. Document your plan before you begin.  Write out a detailed list of things to do.
2. Arrange for A/C maintenance prior to leaving.
3. Arrange to have A/C filters changed at least once every 60 days while away.  
4. Shut off water service to home.
5. Disable the power to your water heater.
6. Arrange to have your water heater flushed prior to returning.
7. Empty and unplug your refrigerator.
8. Leave refrigerator dry and open to prevent mold growth.
9. Arrange to have the refrigerator turned back on at least 24 hours prior to your return.
10. If leaving a vehicle behind, arrange to have the vehicle started at least once every two weeks.
11. 12. Refresh your Hurricane Preparation Plan.  Keep in mind these items need to be addressed PRIOR to a storm approaching:
    1. Who is going to install hurricane protection (panels, shutters, etc.)
    2. Who is to secure all loose items around the exterior of the property?
    3. Who is going to inspect the property for damage after a storm?
    4. Who is going to coordinate contractors to make repairs in case of damage?
